URCs 3rd Annual Conference, 11/12 May 2004

"URCs - Coming of Age"

English Partnerships held its third annual conference dedicated to Urban Regeneration Companies on the 11 and 12 May 2004. The two-day event was held in Liverpool, home of one the three pilot URCs.

The conference was held at a particularly exciting time for URCs with the early URCs having built up a momentum for delivery, new URCs seeking to follow that lead through visions and masterplanning, and ODPM establishing new guidelines following a recent stocktake.

English Partnerships sought to provide a range of topics, some relating to the host city and some covering URCs in operation. Features included the keynote speaker, Dan Biederman from 34th Street Partnership and Bryant Park Restoration Corporation, who discussed private sector funding initiatives for regeneration projects in New York. In addition, there were two specific time slots for networking to allow emerging URCs to encourage the sharing of ideas and 'lessons learnt', between emerging and established URCs.

The range of presentations offered delegates informative, innovative and practical advice on aspects of the urban regeneration business. Where possible, copies of the presentations are available to view and include overviews of:

  • Regeneration of Liverpool, as the host city

  • Community engagement

  • Heritage and regeneration

  • Masterplanning

Keith Hill MP, Minister of State for Housing and Planning, ODPM, was unable to attend. However a copy of his address to delegates at the conference is available below.
