The Welsh Assembly Government and Newport City Council are working on an ambitious programme to regenerate and revitalise the City of Newport.
Urban Regeneration Company Newport Unlimited is a partnership of the Welsh Assembly Government and Newport City Council, working with the private sector, to promote investment and regeneration in Newport.
Set up in 2003, Newport Unlimited aims to lead, or facilitate, the regeneration of three areas:
Central Area: The heart of the city - revitalised with new shops, leisure facilities, offices, homes, jobs, landscaping and riverside walkways Eastern Expansion Area: A new community will be established on and around land released from the Llanwern Steelworks site creating a new district with 5,000 new homes and local facilities, parks and landscaping and new employment opportunities Western Area: Building on the success of the Newport West Business Parks around junction 28 of the M4, creating thousands of jobs in a high quality international standard business park environment. The three development areas will be served and connected by high quality transport links which have already been improved by the opening of the Southern Distributor Road in 2004
The Central Area Master Plan will see new retail centres, a cultural left bank district playing home to the arts and education; a strengthened commercial core with improved business and living opportunities; improved transport systems including new roads and the renovation of the railway station; new housing developments and the creation of riverside walkways and green public spaces
Newport's position on the M4 corridor, located midway between Cardiff and Bristol, gives it an excellent vantage point to attract job-creating investment, due to excellent motorway links including the M4, M5 & M50. Newport City Centre is 1 mile from the M4, 11 miles from Cardiff, 20 Miles from Bristol and 1 hour 50 minutes by train to London. Newport is a prime location with 1.5 million people within 45 minutes driving time (764,000 of working age). The regeneration programme underway in Newport, will establish it as a premier location for living, working and leisure.
The City of Newport is very proud to be hosting the 2010 Ryder Cup Golf Tournament. A hub of growth and regeneration, Newport is fast becoming an ideal location for business, leisure and entertainment. Being the host city for the 2010 Ryder Cup is a source of huge excitement and an opportunity that Newport is already embracing.
