Transform Hull City Centre into a thriving destination

Hull's City Centre Masterplan was launched in 2004, with an aim of improving the economic performance of Hull City Centre through the targeting of resources in six Strategic Development Areas (SDAs)

Retail Circuit/City Centre Core

  • St Stephen's - 2007 saw the opening of St Stephen's, a £200m retail-led scheme which added big name stores such as Zara, La Senza, H&M and Jane Norman to the city's retail offer as well as an Express by Holiday Inn, two new cinemas, including Europe's first multiplex digital cinema, the Albermarle Music Centre and the beautifully restored Paragon Interchange which delivers some 24,000 people to St Stephens' door each day.

  • Quay West - improvements are underway to the existing Princes Quay that include the development of a 10 screen Vue cinema complex that opened December 2007, which houses the UK's first digital cinema. An enhanced dining experience will open in 2009 that will capitalise on the unique eastern aspect overlooking Princes Dock. Quay West is an impressive £300m development which will extend and open out Princes Quay to the west and will create a fantastic city quarter, defined by new streets, public squares and open spaces.

  • Albion Square and Heart of the City - the current wasted space of Albion Square will become a magnificent area of public realm, around which the area's stunning Georgian architecture will show its full beauty, with the birth of new cafe-bars, offices, restaurants, apartments and shops. Land assembly is well advanced and a development framework is being prepared.

  • Waterfront

  • Humber Quays - situated on Hull's spectacular waterfront, Humber Quays is taking shape and is now home to The Royal Bank of Scotland, PricewaterhouseCoopers and World Trade Centre Hull & Humber, Barclays Commercial and Chameleon Business Interiors. Outline planning has been agreed for phase two of the development and a developer selected for a waterside restaurant with office and residential space above.

  • Fruit Market - £100+ million investment to create a cosmopolitan development of an old town location including residential, workspace and specialist retail & leisure facilities, bordering Hull Marina. Preferred developers have been agreed and land assembly for the project is currently at 75%.

  • East Bank of the River Hull - there are two major schemes wit hplanning permission on the East Bank of the River Hull. The southern area has planning permission for a residential-led development, completed with retail and leisure which will be stitched back in the city's Old Town through a new landmark footbridge which is on track for completion late 2009. The 136-bed Premier Inn hotel and adjoining multi-storey car park will open early in 2009. To the north of this is the Clarence Mills complex which has permission for mixed use redevelopment, primarily as student housing, casino, restaurants and offices.

  • Accelerate Hull's economic development

We're harnessing our key strengths to move forward building long lasting economic success. Work on developing our three key growth sectors has progressed significantly and priority projects in each sector are in development.

    Ports & Value Added Logistics

With the largest ports complex in the UK, Hull & Humber handles 16% of the country's seaborne trade and offers a major geographical advantage for transportation links into and out of the UK. A combination of excellent infrastructure, access to European markets and pioneering developments has established Hull & Humber as a centre of excellence for logistics and a vital hub for trade and industry.

    Renewable Energy

Home to Conoco Philips, Total and BP, Hull & Humber is an important UK energy hub and is well on its way to becoming a world-class centre for research and production of bio-fuels. As announced by E.ON UK, the region will soon be home to one of the largest wind farms anywhere in the country and with a nationally recognised experimentation site for tidal technology, its natural assets and cutting-edge research facilities mean that the city-region is ideally placed to capitalise on the growth in the renewable energy market.

    Healthcare Technologies

With a host of healthcare giants including Smith & Nephew, Reckitt Benckiser and Seven Seas operating multi-million pound operations out of the city in addition to an impressive track-record of medical breakthroughs and world-class research facilities, Hull is bolstering its position in the global healthcare market.

Hull is already established as an International Centre for Woundcare R&D, has a strong diagnostics and medical devices sector and has recently launched the first pilot telehealth project monitoring heart failure.
